Excavation
My work delves into the theme of excavation, both as a physical process and a metaphor for self-discovery. Returning to my hometown of Florianópolis, I embarked on a creative journey that unearthed deep-rooted memories and connections to the island’s folklore, traditions, and natural beauty. These sculptures are the result of this introspective excavation—an exploration of my past and cultural identity translated into form. Each piece carries the raw energy of discovery, resembling artifacts unearthed from the earth—organic, textured, and imbued with a sense of mystery. The flowing, rippling surfaces echo the winds, waves, and landscapes of Florianópolis, while the sharp, mythic silhouettes evoke figures from the island’s rich folklore. These works stand as visual representations of rootedness and transformation, embodying a dialogue between personal history and collective memory.
Through these sculptures, I aim to bridge the past and present, blending the tactile act of shaping clay with the symbolic act of recovering one’s origins. This series reflects not only a connection to Florianópolis but also a universal process of rediscovering and reimagining one’s identity through art.
